The Texas congressman who was calling for Trump’s impeachment last month is now creating formal articles of impeachment against the president.
Even though most Congressional Democratic leaders stated they need facts so that they can base any impeachment proceeding, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, said he has no need of them.
“The facts are simple and indisputable,” Green stated Tuesday. “The president fired the FBI director because the director was investigating the president’s campaign connections to Russian interference in the presidential election.”
Additional investigations, and even the upcoming testimony of former FBI Director James Comey, will change nothing.
“This will remain obstruction of justice regardless of the findings of any investigation,” he stated.
“Obstruction of justice by the president is the problem,” he continued. “Impeachment by Congress is the solution.”
The first time Green called for the impeachment of Trump was May 17 in a speech on the House floor.
“This is about my position. This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved. The president must be impeached,” he stated in that speech.
Other members of the Congressional Black Caucus were demand impeachment as well. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., started calling for impeachment from the day of Trump’s inauguration.
“When that word comes up I always say to my colleagues in the Congress, my constituents, and people across the country what I said before: Anything you do has to be based on data, evidence, facts. So you can speculate, but it’s got to be the law and the facts and how they match up,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., stated on Monday.
Other Democrats who are also opposing Trump are uncertain of impeachment at this stage.
“I don’t think impeachment is the move right now,” stated Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y. “I just want to know the facts.”
Any effort to impeach Trump would mean that the House has to pass articles of impeachment against the president, who would then have to pass a Senate trial on those charges. That would likely not pass the current House, which is controlled by Republicans.
President Bill Clinton impeachment was last effort that the House has made, after Monica Lewinsky scandal, but the Senate cleared Clinton of all charges.
