High school student arrested in beheading of Lawrence teen

An arrest has been made in connection with the beheading of a 16-year-old teen in Lawrence.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said during a Saturday afternoon press conference that Mathew Borges has been charged with the murder of Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino.

Borges, 15 years old, attended Lawrence High School with the victim.

Blodgett declined to speculate regarding any potential motives behind the violent homicide.

The Lawrence sophomore will be charged as an adult and arraigned Monday morning.

Viloria-Paulino’s body was found by a woman walking her dog near the river Thursday afternoon. He was reported missing on Friday, Nov. 18.

“I live here, I work here, I’m concerned about this,” Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera said during a press conference Friday afternoon. “I question how it could happen in our community.”

He and Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said Friday that Viloria-Paulino was believed to be the intended target.

“This is not a random act,” Rivera said.

This article was updated Monday, Dec. 5 with the correct age and spelling of the suspect.
